Loretto Hospital encourages our patients to be pro-active participants in their healthcare treatment plan. How can you be pro-active? Below is a cheat-sheet for a few things you can do to be a pro-active patient: - Eat healthy: Have a diet that is rich in fruits and vegetables.
- Exercise: Being overweight can increase your risk of developing diabetes, cancer, stroke, heart disease, it can also limit the activities that you can participate in with your children, friends, and other family.
- Be honest with your nurse and physician; in order to serve you best they must be informed accurately about you and your health history. Remember, the things that you tell your physician and nurse is completely confidential!
- Follow the instructions of your physician or nurse exactly.
- Fill your prescriptions and take your medicine as prescribed, your physician prescribes medicine to keep you healthy; if you do not take your medicine it can affect you getting better.
- Bring all medication that you take to your appointments.
- ASK QUESTIONS, your health is a collective effort and if you as the patient do not understand what is going on or why, the chances of getting your health in check decreases. Our physicians want you to ask questions, they are here to assist you in getting better. Here are a few questions you can ask:
- What is my main problem?
- Why am I taking these medications?
- Why is it important to do the things you are asking me to do?
Remember that it is always best to write down all of your questions before you come to the hospital, because we are all prone to getting nervous about being in the hospital setting and forgetting to remember certain questions we really wanted to ask.
