Loretto Hospital CEO Named Among Top 100 Physician Leaders In Hospitals And Health Systems

CHICAGO, IL – November 13, 2014 – For the second consecutive year, The Loretto Hospital’s Chief Executive Officer and Chief Medical Officer Dr. Sonia Mehta is once again included among the 2014 list of top 100 leaders by Becker's Hospital Review, a monthly publication offering up-to-date business and legal news and analysis relating to hospitals and health systems.

The list is published each year to feature hospital and health system executives that hold medical degrees or are doctors of osteopathic medicine. The Becker's Hospital Review editorial team selects leaders through an editorial review process who have risen to the forefront based on their healthcare leadership experience, accolades and commitment to promoting quality healthcare.

“This is truly an honor to once again be recognized and included by Becker among such a prolific group of health care executives. I strongly believe that the strength of a team is each individual member. And, the strength of each member is the team. I received this honor – not because of what I have done – but because of the strong group of leaders and managers at The Loretto Hospital who have supported me and the process of doing what is necessary to deliver quality health care to our patients,”

Dr. Mehta said. Dr. Mehta received her medical degree from NHL Municipal Medical College of Ahmedabad, India, where she graduated with honors. Soon after, she completed her medical residency in Internal Medicine at West Suburban Hospital in Oak Park, as well as a Hematology/Oncology Fellowship at Saint Francis Hospital in Evanston. In addition, she earned an MBA from Northwestern University’s Kellogg School of Management.

Administratively, Dr. Mehta has been a strong force in health care over the past 18 years, holding leadership positions at Victory Medical Center in Stanley, Wisconsin; Condell Acute Care Centers in Libertyville; Alexian Brothers Medical Center in Hoffman Estates; and Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights; where she was Chief of Ambulatory Services. Since assuming the role as CEO and CMO at Loretto, Dr. Mehta has achieved a number of successful accomplishments to strategically position Loretto to have a greater competitive edge in today’s health care market.

In October, Loretto received an ‘A’ rating from Leapfrog Group after years of making dramatic improvements in the areas of quality, patient safety, and overall structural enhancements to its facilities. Loretto Hospital also opened a new retail pharmacy on its main floor to accommodate the community and to ensure it is providing continuum of care to its patients. In conjunction with the new outpatient pharmacy, The Loretto Hospital also renovated its inpatient pharmacy to include a state-of-the-art workspace and computer system to better serve patients while they are in the hospital’s care. Additional new offerings include: a Cardiac Catheterization Laboratory (also known as the cardiac cath lab); state-of-the art diagnostic imaging suite; and new doctors and expanded medical services and programs.

With regard to the new healthcare services that are now available to the community, in collaboration with PCC Wellness, Loretto offers patients quality primary care, geriatric medicine, an eye clinic, behavioral health services, pediatrics, women’s health, family planning and dental services. The Loretto Hospital is also a member of the Better Health Network Accountable Care Entity (ACE), a new process of coordinating healthcare services in Illinois to new potential Medicaid recipients as well as to families already receiving Medicaid.

“The Loretto Hospital has an incredible testimony of withstanding hardship with a long-standing history of always bouncing back. I look at us as the comeback kid. Now I’m a proud part of Loretto’s history. But more importantly, I’m a very proud to be a part of a team of excellent physicians, staff, and future leaders in health care. We all share in the success at Loretto and in my recognition from Beckers,” Dr. Mehta said.
